United Nations Development Program (UNDP)

UNDP is the United Nation's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is present in 166 countries, working on solutions to global and national development challenges.

UNDP has over thirty years of experience in Jordan, having provided financial and technical assistance to the Kingdom since 1976. UNDP's focus is to help Jordan build and share solutions to the challenges of:

1. Reducing Poverty: UNDP focuses on areas of poverty reduction and promotion of human development through nationally-owned solutions.  UNDP sponsors innovative projects, connects Jordan to global best practices and resources, promotes the role of women and youth in development, and works with a broad range of partners to help the Kingdom achieve its commitment to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). UNDP Jordan’s engagement in poverty reduction focuses on two areas:

  • Strengthening pro-poor participatory planning, implementation and monitoring.
  • Supporting entrepreneurship and SMEs growth, with particular focus on women and youth.

2. Promoting Good Governance: The goal of Good Governance is to build up institutions and processes that are more responsive to the needs of all citizens. Through building the capacities of the public sector, UNDP supports Jordan's efforts to promote public participation and advance accountability, transparency, efficiency at all levels. UNDP Jordan interventions focus on three major components:

  • Promoting human rights.
  • Enhancing public sector efficiency, transparency and accountability.
  • Supporting monitoring and evaluation systems and processes.

 3. Protecting the Environment and Natural Resources: Jordan is classified as one of the 10 most water scarce countries in the world with a per capita water availability of 153 m3 per year. Coupled with population growth, rapid urbanization, industrialization, air pollution and low energy efficiency, the water sector is under considerable and continuous pressure. UNDP helps Jordan strengthen its capacity through providing innovative policy advice and sharing best practices in the water sector.

UNDP’s interventions in this area include four major components:

  • Compliance with global environmental conventions.
  • Sound water resources management.
  • Safe management of hazardous waste.
  • Energy efficiency.

4. Reducing Risks: UNDP aims at recreating an environment in which people can live safely and in which economic and social well-being can occur free from the constraints imposed by natural or manmade disasters.  UNDP works with partners and establishes firm foundations for the effective management and preparedness to address risks in the country, with the ultimate goal of advancing the UN Millennium Development Goals on poverty reduction.
